To be effective participants
in the changing American society, seniors must be willing and able to
learn the new information technologies. One segment of the population
that has generally been assumed to be most resistant to adopting new
technologies is older adults. A recent survey, however, demonstrated
that this stereotype is out of date and that seniors have begun to make
use of computers in substantial numbers. Other data in the study
suggest that "while older adults are not typically the earliest adopters
of new technologies, they are very willing to make use of them as they
become more mature and their benefits become better established”
“I
have a goal... that is to help senior citizens combat loneliness, feel a
part of today’s technology and to get answers to everyday questions
that senior citizens may face.”
While entertainment, staying
mentally active, and even earning a little money are not trivial reasons
for learning how to use computers to travel the information highway,
there are other, perhaps even more important incentives. Many seniors
are alone; some are even virtual or actual "shut-ins" who cannot get out
of the house. Computers provide a virtual door to the world that can
provide benefits ranging from intellectual stimulation to life-enhancing
communication.
The SeniorTech Program was introduced
after realizing that there are numerous senior citizens in Salem County
who would like to have a more fulfilling understanding of how to use
computers, but don’t know where to turn. Von Ahnen Technology
Consulting's Senior Tech Program is not only a
computer mentoring organization, but rather a complete computer service
& support organization.
